Czes - violin maker - researcher
Czes, being a Doctor of Physics and working at Vilnius University, decided to become a violin maker in 1990.
But his journey to the world of making musical instruments had started approximately twelve years earlier. Czes produced ancient Lithuanian stringed folk instruments (kankles) and researched their acoustical characteristics. During that time he wrote two articles on kankles acoustics and made over sixty such instruments.
His start as a violin maker was neither easy, nor short. For several years he sought to acquire the basics of the violin making art.
His prolonged search finished successfully in 1993, when during X International Tchaikovsky Competition / II International Violin-Making Competition (Moscow) he met the world-famous violin maker Jan Pawlikowski from Krakow, Poland. Working under the supervision of the master violin maker, he made his first viola, which was purchased by a domestic professional viola player.
Living in Eastern Europe, Czes had a possibility to get acquainted with Russian, Polish, German, Czech… violin making ideas.
To understand the acoustical fundamentals of the violin family instruments completely, Czes joined Catgut Acoustical Society (CAS) - the world leader in the area - in 1993. At that time he participated in several International Conferences on Acoustics of musical instruments (Stockholm, Sweden - 1994 and Detroit, USA - 1996), organized by CAS.
In 1996 he was joined by his wife Birute.
