Below you will find some information about “Kul Violins” Studio violin makers Birute and Czes Kul. Their areas of activities, created instruments, services etc. are shortly described in a separate article.

Being a Doctor of Physics, Czes decided to become a violin maker. Driven by his overall desire, he came across those stringed instruments in early 1992. He successfully found a possibility to work for some time in a shop of the world-famous luthier Jan Pawlikowski from Krakow, Poland. Here is link to his Web-site. Presently Czes is mainly oriented in investigation of fine bowed instruments’ acoustical properties and mainly ways to improve violin sound.
Birute, who has traditional painter’s background, highly desirable for musical instruments making, joined him in 1996. She also plays violin family instruments occasionally – mainly for testing purposes.
Way towards violin makers
Having entered the highly exciting world of instruments making, Birute and Czes had to learn and master abundant know-how in various areas. After years spent in this strange world, mysteries started disappearing one by one.
As presently activities of both makers are somewhat different, they are working in separate places. One of them – Birute mainly performs jobs traditional to luthiers (violin makers), whilst Czes researches acoustic parameters and defines ways and/or makes suggestions to improve instrument sound characteristics.
Common set of their features (Birute’s artistic eye and ability to test an instrument, as well as Czes’ scientific view) helps them to create instruments satisfying everybody concerned – professional players and amateurs, teachers and students…
Their collective experience now enables them to make any classical bowed instrument with superior quality, but violin remains their favourite and most often mastered instrument. Undoubtedly, violin creation alone requires finding many answers and solutions in a way towards so special and magnificent singing sound. But the reward is the quality of sound achieved.
Results of their work at initial stage (before NZ) are briefly described in testimonial of the viola player and violin soloist. Some records of their customer responses are presented in a separate article.
Living in New Zealand they are teaching first their NZ student. You can read his testimonial.
Probably the best possible evaluation of Birute and Czes’ activities as violin makers is provided in an evaluation from couple of top New Zealand violin players and teachers.
After two years living in New Zealand Birute and Czes started gaining popularity as violin makers and repairers. For more information please take a look at testimonials section.
