Studio

The absolutely major part of a musical instrument (violin, viola, cello or guitar etc) maker’s / repairer’s work – creating fine custom instruments, or performing repair and maintenance – is executed in a studio or workshop. Therefore it definitely is a place where the violin maker spends the largest part of every day.

Activities of both violin makers – Birute and Czes – are somewhat different, they are working in separate places. One of them – Birute mainly performs jobs traditional to all musical instrument makers, whilst Czes concentrates his attention on acoustical testing at every stage of violin making.

Strictly speaking, areas of operations for both violin makers are not dissociated – one with no delay helps another whenever necessary.

Thus cooperating at every stage of instrument making, Birute and Czes contribute to the creation of beautiful and well-sounding instruments.

Dedicated violin makers, combining the best aspects of traditional violin making with new techniques and knowledge, can resolve practically every problem that may occur.

Starting activities as a violin maker, Czes had no idea what makes a good violin sound. At the beginning he went the usual way – started copying Stradivarius violin shape. Later he tried other (Guarnerius etc.) shapes. Later he and Birute realised that they must follow not just aesthetic, but mainly acoustical guidelines.

Presently the Kul couple are sure that it is almost impossible to copy any violin, especially its sound characteristics. So they mainly work creating instrument sound and they measure their success in the appreciation of their clients.
