Definitely the most important way to have minimum maintenance is to play a correctly made instrument. The best examples of them represent well preserved old Italian instruments.
Although the state of an instrument depends on a musician’s care to a major extent, other problems beyond the player’s control can happen at any time.
One of the most common causes of trouble is humidity and/or atmospheric changes. It is well known that timber is hygroscopic, i.e. can absorb moisture. Because of this reason wooden parts expand in humid environment and shrink or in dry conditions .
Sudden humidity changes can cause various problems to the instrument, and they are impossible to avoid. When such a problem has occurred, the wisest solution is to deliver the instrument to a violin maker as soon as possible.
Some other aspects of violin maintenance are working with , bridge, fingerboard, pegs, cleaning …, which must dealt with promptly performing well-timed repair. Each of these operations can help avoid more serious problems, when performed in time. And if any of these problems remain neglected, the instrument may need more serious, time consuming and expensive repair or even restoration.
