Basic instrument maintenance
Definitely the most important way to achieve minimum violin maintenance problems is to play a correctly made instrument. The best examples of them represent well – preserved old Italian violin family instruments
Although the state of an instrument depends mostly on a musician’s care, there can be
other unforeseen problems.
One of the most widespread problems for an instrument is humidity and/or atmospheric changes. It is well known that timber is hygroscopic, i.e. can absorb moisture. Because of this wooden parts can expand or shrink depending on humidity changes.
Sudden humidity changes can cause various problems to the instrument, and they are hardly possible to avoid. And if such a problem has occurred, the wisest solution is to deliver the instrument to a violin maker with no any delay.
Some other aspects of violin maintenance are working with , bridge, fingerboard, pegs, cleaning … Each of these operations can help in avoiding more serious problems, when performed in time.
And if any of these problems remains neglected, the instrument may require more serious repair or even restoration later
